This is my favorite hotel in the area, with clean rooms and friendly staff. It's inside Beijing's first ring of downtown, and the Forbidden City north gate is about a 20-minute walk away. The main entrance is the south gate, where you need to buy your tickets.

A cozy, comfortable place. I was the last person to check in that night and got a free upgrade to a suite. Breakfast was OK, and the surroundings are really nice. There's a food street just to the left on the next street, a good spot for group dinners and get-togethers.

The broth was spicy and full of flavor, and you can choose spicy or clear. Their sauce bar is great, with lots of meat choices and some vegetables too. The menu has pictures, but you'll need to speak Mandarin. Get the watermelon juice. If you don't like much heat, stick to level 1, since the peppercorns can get really hot as the broth boils.
