We arrived after an overnight flight to find the lobby packed with cement sacks. The receptionist explained through Google Translate that the hotel was being renovated and couldn't accommodate us, so we had to drag our luggage around looking for another room while exhausted from the long flight. We had booked Hanting Hotel Beijing You'anmen through Expedia, received confirmation, and paid the full $91.85 for one night. Neither the hotel nor Expedia had contacted me to cancel beforehand. The receptionist said cancelling the reservation would be easy. Three weeks later, Expedia told us the hotel had refused a refund and offered only a $25 inconvenience voucher. What a shame. Expedia eventually refunded us in full, so thanks for that, but I still say avoid this hotel.

I booked through Expedia, got a confirmation, and paid the full $91.85 for one night. After flying to Beijing and taking a taxi, I found the hotel full of cement sacks. The receptionist told me renovations meant I couldn't stay. Neither the hotel nor Expedia had warned me or asked me to cancel, and she said I could cancel the reservation later. When I requested a refund through Expedia, they said the hotel management had refused. Expedia offered me a $25 inconvenience voucher instead. Where did I go wrong? Was that fair? I planned to leave bad reviews for both the hotel and Expedia, but I also wanted to know what I should have done differently so this wouldn't happen again. Expedia's email said they had contacted Hanting Hotel(south of Railway Station You'anmen several times to ask for an exception, but couldn't get the property manager to waive the cancellation fee. They said the booking rules still applied and a refund wasn't possible, then offered USD 25.00 in OneKeyCash for the inconvenience. They apologized and said they had tried to advocate for me but couldn't do more because of the property's refund policy. UPDATE: After two weeks of emails back and forth with Expedia, they refunded all my money, so the issue is resolved. Still, please don't stay at Hanting Hotel You'anmen Beijing.
