The airport ride was the worst part of my stay. Staff had told me the concierge would arrange a cab, but on the day I left they suddenly said they couldn't help because it was raining. I had to go out into a busy, soaking-wet intersection and hail one myself. A lousy send-off. I stayed at Tailong Hotel twice, at the beginning and end of a guided trip. It's in a handy spot at the south end of Tienanmen Avenue, and the hotel was adequate, though I could smell smoke throughout despite it supposedly being non-smoking. My first room, on the north side of the 3rd floor, was nicer than the one on the south side of the 5th floor, which felt more like a 2-star room.

This was easily the worst hotel I stayed at in China. The breakfast was terrible and served down the street, not even in the hotel. Staff don't speak English, and the WiFi was impossible to connect to. The rooms were smoky and moldy, as the photo shows. The air conditioning didn't work, hot water was out in many rooms, and the beds were hard as rocks.

My holiday was tainted by the whole experience here. The service was appalling and the rooms weren't worth the savings I thought I'd get from a budget hotel. Costs kept piling up: I was misled into missing the 15% service charge when quoted the room price, given an English price for the scammy shopping tours that you're obliged to tip on, and quoted three times the public taxi fare to get to the airport. Don't book this hotel, whatever your budget.

The location was good and the room was okay, but the shower took ages to get hot and the air conditioning barely worked.
