I spent seven days here and found the staff welcoming and friendly. The room was clean, the bed comfortable, and the location handy, with the shopping center and train station within walking distance. The hotel used to be a landmark and one of the city’s luxury properties, but you can see it’s past its best. It needs a major renovation, hopefully soon. I’d still stay here again when I return to Beijing.

My favorite part was breakfast. There were loads of choices, and as a Westerner it gave me a chance to try Chinese food. The staff were generally friendly, and shopping and the street with all the embassies are nearby. The hotel itself felt a bit dingy and due for renovations. The rooms were dated, but workable.

It’s sad seeing this hotel slip. It was one of Beijing’s best and oldest, and was a Sheraton for at least two decades. From around 2008, its standards began to fall and it became run down. Newer hotels opened nearby, but this one didn’t keep up. I’m not sure whether it’s still a Sheraton.

During a weeklong staycation with a friend from the States, I was stopped almost every night when returning to my room. Security kept checking my ID and room card, even after seeing me several days in a row. This didn’t seem to happen to every guest. They let most men through, but stopped a couple of us younger women. That kind of check was unacceptable and misogynistic. Shame on Sheraton for allowing it in Beijing. It was the worst part of my vacation and the most horrendous service I’ve had from Sheraton anywhere in the world.

The staff everywhere were wonderful, and we had a great meal in the dining area one evening. The menu leaned more European than Asian. Refurbishment is underway, so it can get noisy. If you need to sleep during the day, ask reception for a quiet room. It’s a great hotel, and once the work is finished it’ll be excellent. We’ll be back.
