The location and price were the good points. The rooms felt old and dusty, and the radiators didn’t work. There was air conditioning, but it switched off when you left the room. At reception, nobody spoke English, and there’s no elevator in this five- or six-storey building. The bathroom was tiny, with the shower basically in the middle, and the water kept swinging between too hot and too cold.

I stayed there with my friend Djamel Bahloul in March 2009, July 2009, and July 2011. It was a comfortable, quiet hotel in a nice spot, near the city centre, and the staff were very friendly.
