Borrman Hotel Chengdu Tianfu Square Metro Station

We used this hotel as a base while visiting Chengdu and Chongqing. It was a really nice place, and getting around the city was convenient. They offer free laundry, and you can leave your luggage there if you're heading away for a few days.

Receptionist Xiao Li was friendly and very helpful. The hotel is right in the center, with museums and restaurants nearby, so it was easy to explore the city. The rooms were comfortable and very nice for such a reasonable price. I'd stay here again next time I'm in town.

Getting there is easiest from Tianfu Square Metro: take Exit A, cross the road, then head through the small alley on the left. The hotel is among six others inside the PICC building. One tip, use Amap (Amap) for the right pin, since Google Maps can be off. Its location was the highlight for us. Metro Lines 1 and 2 meet at Tianfu Square, about a five-minute walk away, and connect to most major sights and both railway stations Chengdutong and Xipu. Chunxi Road is one stop away or a pleasant 10-minute walk. The immediate area is quieter and less crowded, which made it a relaxing place to return to. We stayed in two rooms, and both were spacious, clean, and comfortable. The universal sockets on either side of the bed worked with US, China, AU, Europe, MY, and SG plugs, so I didn't need an adapter. Signage and items were in English and Chinese. I also liked the motion-activated sleep light under the bed for dim lighting on late-night toilet visits. There were a couple of drawbacks: sometimes smoke or instant noodle smells came from neighboring rooms, and in one room a faulty mosquito net left the window stuck open, letting in some car noise. The neighborhood itself was generally quiet. The staff were polite, patient, and helpful throughout. They stored our large bags for free while we took multi-day trips to places like Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong. They also helped with local errands, including collecting delivery orders and providing a local number for ticket bookings that require one. The free evening desserts were a nice touch, with two different Chinese desserts each night, and were well worth trying. Breakfast costs ¥38 and was decent if included in a package, though there are better, cheaper choices in the nearby alley. The free afternoon tea was disappointing, just 2-3 kinds of cookies. A couple of room details could use work too: the toilet flush takes real effort to press, and windows should close properly to keep out noise and smells.

The room was very dirty, and the staff weren't especially kind, which surprised me for China. When we arrived, the clerk called it an “upgrade,” but our room looked straight out over a dumpster. A very disappointing stay.
