The elevator policy was strange: they made me remove my shoes and put on slippers before going up to my room. I'm Chinese, so I don't see that as a cultural explanation. The WiFi was so slow it might as well not have worked, and the rice noodles at the breakfast buffet kept giving me diarrhea. I'd avoid them.

Ms. Zhou Hui patiently talked us through routes and suggested good places to eat in Chengdu, and she was warm and attentive. She and Ms. Gong Yushuang at reception also noticed our tired legs and arranged a room with a bathtub. The travel agency booked us into this elegant, clean, comfortable hotel, conveniently near the subway. That help made the trip feel perfect. Thanks as well to the African-American receptionist!

I needed a place to sleep after getting drunk yesterday, so I picked this hotel at random last night. I'd walked past it plenty of times and assumed it was a little inn, but the inside was a surprise. For under 200 yuan, the double room was 30-40 square meters, spotless, and had both a bathtub and balcony. The features and amenities seemed more like what I'd expect for 400-500 yuan. There's a tea table in the courtyard under a few old trees. If I hadn't needed to work today, I'd probably have sat there in the sun.
