Somerset Riverview Chengdu

We found the room disappointing. It felt a little rundown and had a noticeable mouldy smell. The hotel had turned the living room into an extra sleeping area for more guests at a higher price, but that mattress was uncomfortable and seemed to cause insect bites. Breakfast was simple. The lobby itself was pleasant, but reception service didn't stand out. Compared with our stay at Somerset in Guangzhou, this one fell short on both service and room condition.

The river path is right next door and was great for a morning jog. There’s also a children’s playground, billiards and table tennis for adults, a large indoor pool, and a big, well-equipped gym. Our room was spacious, and breakfast had a moderate but sufficient range for a nutritious meal, with the main dish changing daily. The staff at the entrance changed each day, but they were all helpful with luggage, doors, and the elevator. The receptionist spoke clear English, and we could borrow an umbrella for free. A perfect stay.

The bathroom smell would put me off coming back. Both of our rooms had a sewerage smell in the bathroom and toilet, and the lobby smelled too. There was also loud drilling from construction next door. I'd ask the hotel about construction before booking for the next few months. The rooms are large, with decent showers and bathrooms, and they're fairly close to the airport and central in the city. Staff were great. There’s a washing machine and dryer in the room, plus a nice gym with dumbbells and a boxing ring. The recreation room has a pool table and futsal table. The hotel is fairly dated, with old, thick-carpeted hallways. The pool felt a bit cold in winter, and the jacuzzi was empty with a kids’ slide in it. The bedrooms were on the cold side despite the heater, which is fixed and can’t be adjusted. The blankets were only just warm enough for November temperatures of 10 deg. There’s also an internally connected café next door with a nice Starbucks look, handy for breakfast or remote work.

On our first day, the door lock was broken when we got back, so we couldn't get in. They sent someone to fix it, but left lots of wood scraps inside the door. We had to change rooms because of safety concerns. The next day, my parents came by briefly during breakfast to say hi and help take the kids to the play area so we could eat. We have a 6 months baby and a 5 years old. The hotel restaurant manager or owner was extremely rude and had staff tell my parents to leave because they weren't staying guests. Shocking, disrespectful, and shame on you. I'd give zero stars if I could.
