This is the southern official entrance to DaLi ancient town, and for me it’s the best one. It’s within walking distance of the public transport hub, where you can catch buses to other cities, and there’s a whole stretch of restaurants along the road outside. The gate itself is a relic building, like the ones in Chinese period movies and dramas. Google has made a huge mistake by marking it as a hotel.

No fridge, and the breakfast is poor. There are a lot of better places around here.

You can get a nice view of the city and Cangshan mountain from here. It’s free to visit the South Gate building, though the area that used to be open in full is now limited to the central building.

It’s been restored nicely, though it’s starting to feel rather full of tourists, mostly local visitors rather than westerners. The toilets are amazingly clean and free, and there are plenty of them.

The streets nearby can get busy, but you can get away from the crowds by climbing the South Gate steps onto the city wall. Walk past the photographers taking wedding and honeymoon pictures, with the couples behind their cameras, and there’s a quieter stretch. You’ll have to return the way you came, but then you can say you’ve walked along the city wall.
