The breakfast buffet was great, the room service was cheap, and the Black Forest cake was delicious. We were amazed when we first saw our room. In Vancouver, Canada, one like it would have cost around $300 a night. The heated toilet seat was incredible, lol. The staff arranged an English-speaking taxi driver who took us to the hanging temple and the grottoes. He was amazing, almost like a tour guide, but charged the price of a cheap taxi ride. I can’t remember his name, but say the Canadian couple had him in February. The staff also invited us to the spring festival and got us into the city wall for free with them. Datong became a must-see for us, and I totally recommend staying at the garden hotel if you don’t speak Chinese. Other hotels can be harder for an English-speaking tourist to get help at. Honestly, the only downside is that this hotel set our standards too high, lol. The next hotels we stayed in were five-star and four-star, but neither compared to the garden hotel. Now I just want to go back to Datong.

The breakfast was good, and the staff helpfully arranged a car for our day trip to Yungang grottoes. The toilet was amazing! There were some broken things, including a leaky shower, and noisy dogs outside. Still, it’s a decent place to stay if you’re visiting Datong, for the yungang grottes, for instance.

The restaurant on the second floor was the highlight for us. Locals come from out of town to eat there, and we enjoyed it both nights. The service was quick, the menu had lots of choices, and the prices were very reasonable. We needed a translator to make sense of the dishes. The hotel itself felt clean and well cared for as soon as we walked in. Our room was large and quiet, and we enjoyed looking across the corridors toward the restaurant tables. The rooms and bathrooms had everything we needed for personal care. The architecture is unusual, with rooms on each floor opening onto the restaurant. Breakfast was well stocked, including plenty for those of us who like sweets. Staff were attentive too, and quickly sorted out a small plumbing problem. The location worked well for walks around the historic center and evening visits to the splendid city walls. The tour operator chose this hotel for us, but it’s definitely worth considering.
