Dong Rong Hotel

That $55-a-night rate turned out to be a bargain. I misunderstood the payment setup: the hotel takes a 500 rmb per night deposit when you arrive, then cancels it at checkout if the room is in good shape and charges the right amount. I had thought my advance booking deal wasn't being honored, since I hadn't prepaid and was quoted the full $80 a night. The room and hotel itself were really enjoyable. The room was huge, with tall ceilings, a big window, a comfortable king bed, desk and chairs, and a chaise lounge. The bathroom impressed me too. The modern lobby has a sitting area and a self-playing piano, and breakfast is included, mostly Chinese food with a few Western-friendly options. There's a convenience store right beside the hotel. Getting around was the main drawback. It's on a side street, well away from central Dongguan and Line 2. It's about a 15-minute walk to the metro and 20 minutes downtown. Maybe the new metro lines will make a closer station available. Also, the nearest fast-food place shown on Google Maps is gone, so McNuggets or other fast food means walking at least 20 minutes. On the bright side, that takes you through the central plaza, which looks pretty at night. Reception was slow, and when I finally checked in I couldn't make out my room number. I had to ask for help finding the room, which was embarrassing. At checkout, though, the receptionist complimented my smile and made me feel warm inside. One last thing, the building looks like a prison from the outside, but don't let that put you off. It's quite nice inside.
