There’s a very modest gym and some cute robots that deliver things to rooms while staff look after reception and move around the hotel. The staff are friendly and obliging. The laundry room has two washers and two dryers, detergent, spare laundry bags, and a memo pad and pen to write your room number. Seating is limited, and the machines are busy in the morning and evening. There’s also a steamer and iron for clothes. Fairfield by Marriott at Nanhai, Foshan, is easy to get around from. Wanda Plaza, McDonald’s and lots of local food are a 5 to 10 minute walk away, and you can catch a bus to various sights. The breakfast buffet is decent and worth paying for if you don’t want to think about what to eat in the morning. For lunch and dinner, I’d choose Foshan street food and nearby restaurants, some open early and stay open until midnight. If you like Chinese Gaoliang sorghum liquor, it’s around. Fresh local fruit is hard to come by, but there are plenty of snacks to pick up as you walk around or take back to your room. The usual basics are here: clean rooms, fast internet, free tea and coffee, a solid table and chairs, water replenished regularly, and morning housekeeping. There’s also a 43 inch flat screen LED TV with many channels in different Chinese languages. Access to a lot of digital platforms, like Google and its subsidiaries, Safari, Netflix and Amazon, isn’t available unless you buy an eSIM and activate it before leaving your home country. For the room size and comfort, I think it’s good value.
