Fuzhou Hangshe Homestay (Shangxiahang )

Just about 50 meters from the east entrance of Shangxiahang, this place has the feel of old China in its architecture, with the comfort and luxury still intact. It's a refurbished old building, so don't expect a street view from your room. I didn't mind, though, because the courtyard outside is so relaxing. I could sit there all day listening to the Chinese music. The whole neighborhood is an attraction in itself, and Jasmine Street is within walking distance. I strongly recommend the place, especially since it's really affordable. The owner gave us cookies after we said how good they tasted, and they also provide a complimentary fruit basket. Everyone was friendly. If you have time, they'll offer you tea and welcome you to sit at the tea table and watch their staff prepare it. This isn't an ordinary hostel. Some rooms meet the standard of a 4-5 star hotel. The only downside was the old wooden floor on the first floor. You can hear it creak when people use the stairs, but it wasn't a problem at all.

We came with a big group of friends and family, and the staff were really helpful and accommodating. I had such a wonderful stay here and would love to come back. Can't recommend it enough!

The building's successive courtyards reminded me of Mediterranean Europe. It dates from around 1850 and has been lovingly renovated, and you can stay overnight in the museum. It was first built for a timber merchant's wife, then the state gave it to two young women to look after and run as a hotel. Communication wasn't easy with my limited language skills, but I did understand the explanation of the local tea. You have to duck to enter the bathroom, which some people might see as a compromise. The second floor was originally for servants, so it didn't need high ceilings. Those were reserved for the first floor. I'd happily come back.
