Sun Shine Holiday Hotel Fuzhou

The staff were friendly, and other reviews suggest the location is good, but there are much better places in the same neighbourhood. I wouldn't stay here again. The hotel is fine if you only need somewhere to sleep, but don't expect comfort or amenities, and it doesn't deserve a 4-star rating. The internet kept cutting out and was very weak; the TV had so much static it wasn't worth watching. The bed was hard as a rock, and even with 3 comforters underneath me, I woke up with back pain every night. The building needs renovation. There was also a preschool office outside the elevators on my floor, as though hotel space was being rented to businesses. Breakfast was well below decent quality. I didn't trust most of the dishes, and the meat I tried was undercooked.

I had lunch and dinner there for three nights. The udon broth and miso soup were delicious and tasted authentic. The breakfast was excellent too, with dishes suited to Japanese people, and the food was even better than at Koto Nippon, the Japanese restaurant on the first floor.

I stayed here several times from 1990 to 2010. The service was attentive, and the rooms were comfortable and clean. Breakfast had plenty of both Chinese and Western options. It's close to the big shopping malls and food stalls.

I can't say what the hotel is like now, but it was my regular place to stay when I visited Fuzhou several times over 20 years ago. Back then, I remember it as one of the few hotels where Japanese people could stay safely. It was fairly easy to get to Dongjiekou, Fuzhou's commercial center, and the big bookstore near Wuyi Square. There was a Japanese guide pamphlet in the room, and I enjoyed the morning buffet while watching NHK satellite news. On my last two stays, around 2006, the breakfast quality seemed to have gone downhill somehow, which disappointed me a bit.
