The hike was a highlight for me. Heading out the other way and turning left took me up into the mountains, where I was invited to lunch by three women. There was a monastery, a lovely view across town, and a real feeling of being closer to the gods. Unforgettable. The hostel can also arrange a shared taxi to Dege. It’s about a 15-minute walk into town, and along the way I got to see colorful front doors, yak dung drying on walls, and a very authentic temple with over 100 prayer wheels almost next door. There’s also a small, inexpensive Tibetan-run place to eat nearby along the route. The hostel itself felt friendly and relaxed, with a good menu and good rooms.

They really know the local area, including the bus schedules, and can find good drivers if you want a private car. The food was fantastic and the coffee was great too. All around, a great experience. Thanks very much.
