Shangri-La Guangzhou

The classic-style interiors feel older, but everything is very well maintained and spotlessly clean. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and attentive, with professional service. A metro line behind Shangri-La Guangzhou goes straight to Canton Tower. It takes eight stops, costs around 2 RMB, and you can pay easily with WePay. The restaurants had a good variety of quality food. A comfortable, dependable choice for work or leisure.

Shangri-La Guangzhou has come to feel like a second home to me, which is why writing this feels personal. The Pearl River views and beautiful gardens are lovely, but it’s the people who make the place feel world-class. From the first greeting to the little details at breakfast, the team shows a rare kind of sincerity and joy. Luxury here isn’t loud; you feel it.

The public spaces are a strong point: the gym is great, the indoor pool is good, and the outdoor pool and gardens are really nice. The spa was decent, though crowded most of the time. The hotel is older but very well kept. For the Canton fair, the location is hard to beat, just a couple of minutes’ walk from the entrance. Downtown is about 15 minutes by car. Service was excellent apart from the restaurants, which were too crowded and where waiters didn’t pay attention to guests’ needs. Rooms were comfortable with good beds, though we had single beds instead of a double. Breakfast was average, and dinner at the restaurants was expensive and just okay. The Chinese Michelin restaurant especially left a lot to be desired, and the dinner buffet was average at best. Good stay for the fair, though I’d rather stay closer to the city and take a cab there.

I never stayed at the hotel, but had one of the worst dinners in its lobby. The food came out cold, so they reheated it. The pasta was terrible, and I'm sure the tomato sauce came from a can. What a shame.
