For a solo trip, this budget hotel might work, and some rooms look out over the river. It's also well placed for Guangzhou's old quarter. The building and facilities feel dated, though, and the staff weren't especially friendly. I'd think twice about bringing the family.

The hotel feels quite dated now. It was once the tallest building in Canton and China after the country was established, and it used to have the city's only self-circulating restaurant, up on the roof.

The location along the Pearl River makes for a lovely walk, and at night the neon-lit stretch of river in Canton looks beautiful. Aiqun is a romantic spot for couples dating in the city, with inexpensive rooms and a popular Chinese restaurant. There isn't much else in the way of amenities compared with Howard Johnson Guangzhou. I stayed there with a business guide. A room may have a view of the Stone Church building relic or the Pearl River. Aiqun has a long history, and its exterior keeps the old Canton style of the 1920s, while the inside has been refurbished in a modern way. The name Aiqun literally means “loving society, enjoy group.” I visited the 1987 Canton Fair on behalf of Adelaide Foundry Minsup Pty. Its CEO at the time was Mr. Howard Treloar, an engineer and metal foundry owner serving Australia's mining industry.

The location was excellent and the room was clean and comfortable. I thought it was good value for the money. Staff were good too, while the services and facilities were just fair.
