At night, warm lights spill across Yongqingfang’s old buildings and lanes, giving the area a nostalgic feel with a modern edge. It’s a nice setting for an evening stroll or photos. This Liwan district has been carefully brought back to life. Grey brick homes, narrow alleys, and traditional arcades still show the character of old Guangzhou, while shops, cafés, art spaces, and exhibitions now fill the area. You can browse handicrafts, try local snacks, and sometimes find events celebrating Cantonese opera. Yongqingfang blends its heritage with a lively contemporary feel.

On a rainy day, Yongqingfang felt quieter and more atmospheric than I expected. The wet streets mirrored the shopfronts, and there were fewer people around, which suited a place with so much history. The area seems to have been renovated fairly recently, but the work feels restrained. Its old architecture remains the main attraction. With the qilou arcades and narrow lanes, it’s easy to spend ages wandering and looking up. It almost feels out of place in a modern city, like a piece of old Guangzhou preserved inside the metropolis.

Take your time walking around so you can really enjoy the scenery. The old Xi Guan area has a comforting, nostalgic feel, almost like stepping back in time. I visited during Chinese New Year, and the festive spirit was everywhere. The crowds were something else, but in a good way, and the atmosphere was wonderful.

Lots of people dress up and take pictures here, so with the crowds it’s tough to get a photo without someone in it. Most of the shops seem to sell similar things, and the place felt very touristy and commercialized. It wasn’t my favorite old street in China; I’ve seen ones that are more iconic.

Inside, there’s also Former Residence of Bruce Lee. There’s a museum where you can learn about Cantonese opera history. The place reminded me of Malacca City in Malaysia and Hoi An in Vietnam. It’s a popular tourist spot, though, so expect plenty of people.
