Guangyong Lido Hotel

The location was a real highlight, right in the middle of Beijing Road Pedestrian street, with the area’s restaurants and attractions easy to reach. We had a Deluxe room with two single beds for four nights at the Mercure Hotel, newly opened in July and formerly Lido hotel. There were three of us, and the staff kindly pushed the beds together so we could all fit. The room was spacious and spotless, and we slept peacefully thanks to the excellent soundproofing, even though the floor wasn’t fully carpeted. Complimentary drinks in the Lobby were a nice touch. We also had fun watching the robot bring takeaway orders to our room. We couldn’t find anything to fault and highly recommend staying here when visiting the area.

Lido has become Mercure Hotel, with a modern redesign. You can do your own laundry in the hotel’s free laundry room. The location is excellent, an easy walk to Beijing Road and its shops, stores and restaurants, and next to Tee Mall. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Guangzhou.

The hotel has been rebranded as Mercure Hotel, though it isn’t part of Accor Group. It’s in a great spot for the price, right in the middle of Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, with everything from trendy to cheap shopping and all kinds of food, from traditional Wantan Noodles to avant garde fusion. There are easily 6 Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurants within 1 km, and nearby supper options even after midnight. The subway is less than two hundred meters away, and most of the route is sheltered. I expected the street to be noisy, but I couldn’t hear it from the room. The thick double glazed windows and curtains, along with the heavy room doors, must help. There’s also a free laundry room. I didn’t use it, though it would’ve been useful after 10 days on the road. I’ll have to try it next time. Strongly recommended for first-time visitors to Guangzhou. Rooms 2405 and 2407 were decent, with newer carpets and no mouldy smell. That was a sharp contrast with 2512, 2517 and 2509, which were mouldy, smelly and unhygienic. Wallpaper was peeling in plain sight, the walls and air conditioning vents had mould, the carpet smelled funky, and the bathrooms and showers were unusable. The location is great, right at the beginning of the Beijing road shopping strip. The staff are friendly and accommodating, but don’t speak much English. They’re the only reason I’m giving the hotel two stars.
