The staff made our stay comfortable, and we’d consider coming back. The hotel’s central spot across from Yuexiu Park was a big reason we chose it; it’s one of Guangzhou’s four major parks. It’s also about a 10-minute walk to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, with lots of restaurants, shops, and massage places. Prices are a little higher because of the location, though they still feel affordable compared with places like Texas. Check-in was easy, and Trista helped us. The RMB 1K deposit felt steep, and since I used my AMEX card, the refund may take longer. One thing to know is the executive lounge has permanently closed and is now a restaurant. Instead, the hotel gives RMB 100 daily credit for use on either the 8th or 3rd floor. We used it on the 8th, where a pastry and ginger ale came to about RMB 95 after the mandatory 15% service charge. That’s a reasonable way to spend the credit, but anyone booking specifically for an executive lounge may want to reconsider. The choux puff ¥58 was very hard, and I wouldn’t order it again. We were in room #1610 facing the park, and it was comfortable. We needed a washer, which was available on that floor. They first assigned us a room on the 22nd floor, but the top two floors don’t have washers, so we asked to switch. Sound insulation was okay, though we could hear people talking in the hallway. Wi-Fi worked reliably, but we had to reconnect whenever we came out of the elevator. The AC was the main problem. In early March Guangzhou was already around 25°C/77°F, and although the room was set to 20°C/68°F, it never got that cool. The engineering team came twice without fixing it. They eventually brought a portable cooling unit, which got the room to around 19.5°C and made it much more comfortable. Housekeeping suggested opening the windows at night, but we were worried about bugs and chose not to. Service across the hotel was excellent. Housekeeping usually brought requested items within about five minutes. The concierge team was very helpful too, especially Will, Mona, and supervisor Mr. Huang. Robin went especially far out of his way. We struggled to buy high-speed rail tickets from GZ to Zhangjiajie because, as foreigners, we couldn’t easily use the 12306 railway platform without a Chinese phone number. He spent over 90 minutes troubleshooting with us, called customer service on our behalf, and eventually suggested getting a Chinese SIM card. His patience and dedication impressed us. We told Steve about the experience later. He seemed to be either the front desk manager or manager on duty, and joked that he was the chief apology manager. He also sent fruit and cakes for our anniversary. Breakfast had lots of choices for both Eastern and Western customers, and Tony was friendly. We used the steam and sauna, but the pool was closed for maintenance during our stay. I speak Mandarin and Cantonese, which made communication easier, though most staff seemed to speak decent English too.
For both work trips and holidays in Guangzhou, this would be my first choice among the Hilton hotels. Diamond members get generous suite upgrades and a complimentary bar voucher. Every room also has a washer and dryer, which is especially handy in summer.
The suite setup works well for families, almost like a serviced apartment, though the rooms aren’t especially large and the air-conditioning can be noisy. The hotel is showing its age, but the rooms are in reasonably good shape. The entrance and foyer are plain, so the polished photos in the official materials make it look more impressive than it is. It’s nice enough, just not spectacular. The family room is small but a welcome space for kids. The lounge is excellent, with indoor and outdoor seating for afternoon tea. The pool is fine, though swimming lessons for lots of outside visitors leave hotel guests with limited access. Breakfast has plenty of choice and is very good, though not world class. The location isn’t especially convenient for anything; you’ll need a taxi to get to Beijibg Rd, as with most places. That needn’t put you off. For the price, it’s a very good option.
Housekeeping kept everything clean and tidy throughout our stay. The hotel has been renovated tastefully, and our compact room had a king-sized bed, a smart toilet, and a Dyson hairdryer. There was a washing machine but, oddly, no dryer, so we had to hang our wet clothes around the room. It’s across the road from Yuexiu Park, with convenient bus connections. The nearest metro station is a bit of a walk.
The staff at the front desk, concierge, restaurant, and housekeeping were all attentive. We also got a 100 RMB voucher each day for every room, usable for drinks and desserts at the 8th-floor rooftop garden restaurant, which helped make up for there being no executive lounge. Breakfast was a treat, with custard buns, crisp croissants, freshly made wontons, and fried dough sticks. The hotel’s Lingnan-style furnishings and decor give it real character, and you can walk to Beijing Road, the Guangdong Provincial Museum, and Yuexiu Park. There are plenty of well-known restaurants nearby too. We were fortunate to get a free upgrade from two twin rooms to two adjoining single-kingbed suites. The layouts differed a little, and the main drawback was that both had king beds rather than twins. Otherwise, the suites were spacious, comfortable, and quiet, with smart home features, a smart toilet, separate shower and shower area, and a washer-dryer combo that was a real help with children. Highly recommend it.
