Yangshuo Jasper International Hotel

We stayed as part of a group tour and got a room in what seemed to be a newer wing. The style felt traditional without being too dated, the shower was great, and the air conditioning worked perfectly. It was the best AC we've had in nearly any hotel, which was a real help in humid Yangshuo. Shops nearby were useful, and staff always greeted us with "yellow," which was nice. The elevators got very busy with so many guests, and there are only two. Be careful with the one between the wings, since it goes down to a random staff area. Western breakfast choices were limited. Some corridors smelled strongly of smoke from Chinese guests smoking despite the no-smoking signs, and a couple of people in our group had to change rooms because of it.

For a hotel calling itself four-star, this didn't feel like one. Several things were faulty, including the lock, peephole, light, and even the toilet bowl. The bed was rock hard and the pillow too thin, so I woke with back and shoulder pain. Not all the staff spoke English well. I ended up translating for another foreign traveler while waiting for help with my own enquiry. My bigger service problem was the washing machine and dryer on my floor. Using them meant scanning a QR code that opened WeChat, which I don't have. I asked staff to pay first so I could repay them in cash. A man and a woman came; the woman didn't seem to know how to help, which was fine, but the man, who looked like a technician, stood there and seemed very reluctant. My partner asked whether anyone could explain the dryer, since it's part of the hotel's facilities, and they didn't even try. There was no language barrier, as we both speak Mandarin well. The service was very bad, especially from that man. Breakfast was so-so, and don't be surprised if you see cockroaches roaming around the tables. The tables and cutlery were sticky too.

We stayed one night for the Liu San Jie show. The show, the surrounding area, and the place we stayed weren't really worth a stop, so you could skip this area.

A nice place, with hospitality that's not too bad.
