I expected an internationally known hotel when I booked this newly opened Voco, but the stay fell short. The social media photos had raised my expectations too much. It’s in the middle of the scenic area and the location and views are impressive, but ask ahead for a room with a good outlook: you might get a full scenic view, or just another hostel in front. Helicopters and paramotors pass over often, and can be noisy at busy times. The hotel is inside a local village, beside several hostels, so privacy can be an issue. My Christmas holiday visit was at a busy travel time, yet the pool and rooftop bar were both closed for maintenance. The rice field outside the cafe was bare in winter. October might be a better time, when mornings aren't foggy and you can enjoy the sunrise. The room was new enough, though some details could be better and a few fixtures were already breaking. The aircon stopped working late one night, but staff offered to move us to a larger room. Service was disappointing. Nobody suggested places to visit or told us about an upcoming fireworks festival, helped with our luggage, or offered services. There were also several breakfast and check-in mix-ups, including confusion over member benefits. We didn't get even basic service, let alone hospitality. The two stars are for the friendly cleaning ladies who were willing to help. Staff need more training.

Lore (Xiao Zhou) at the front desk was especially friendly and helpful. She found us cheaper tickets for the Impression of LiuSanJie and showed us how to order dinner on MeiTuan, including having a robot deliver it to our room. The other hotel staff were pleasant and friendly too. The room was spacious, with a spectacular view, and the Elemis bathroom amenities were impressive. The hotel is clean and nicely laid out, and breakfast was good. This may be the best hotel I’ve stayed at in China so far.

The pool and games room are lovely, and there’s green space where the kids can run around. The views, especially at sunrise and sunset, are superb. The new hotel has an upscale feel, but the bedside controls in the room seem designed by a five-year-old, and you can’t reliably switch things on or off when you need to. There’s a huge language barrier for almost everything. If you don’t speak Mandarin, even simple requests take a long time, and getting restaurant recommendations is nearly impossible.

The room was full of mosquitoes, so sleeping was difficult. The elevator had a strong, unpleasant smell, and the air conditioning didn't work properly, leaving the room hot and uncomfortable. My stay at the voco hotel in Guilin was a very poor experience, far below what I expected from a hotel at this level.

The grounds are huge, the scenery is spectacular, and the equipment is modern and advanced. I loved staying here and will definitely come back.
