Our stay in Guiyang was disappointing, and after a few days we switched to another hotel. Breakfast wasn’t included. When I booked, I hadn’t been told otherwise, and we assumed a Marriott-owned hotel might be like many American hotels that generally serve breakfast, especially since we planned to stay for 10 days. There were no Western or Chinese restaurants or food stalls near the hotel, which was inconvenient for us, particularly the American kids who weren’t used to local food. Check-in was also difficult with a Chinese passport. We were traveling as a family with both US and Chinese passports, and the hotel insisted on seeing the Chinese ID of a family member who had left it behind when she emigrated to the US many years ago. The process took a long time, and the woman checking us in wasn’t especially friendly or helpful. I also felt the hotel wasn’t strict enough about the no-smoking rules in hallways or outside the elevator. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to foreigners visiting Guiyang.

This is a very good hotel in a newer part of a town that’s growing quickly. The service was excellent, and it has a 24-hour fitness center and an indoor pool. My only complaint was that the central air conditioning was set a bit high, so we couldn’t get our room below the mid-70s. That seems common in Chinese hotels.

Whale Seafood Restaurant, right by the hotel, was fantastic, and the service throughout was excellent. The people in Guiyang were so warm. I was there for work on my first visit to the city, and breakfast was plentiful. I made sure to take only what I could finish, of course 😉

The food was the highlight for me. Breakfast was excellent, and the lunch and dinner restaurant was great too. The buffet costs around 30 euros, and I thought it was well worth it for the fresh fish, salmon, and sushi. The rooms are clean and comfortable, though they’re showing their age and could use a makeover. It’s a 5-star hotel in Guiyang, China. Recommended!
