This doesn't feel like the five-star Marriott hotels I'm used to. The king bed sagged badly and is so old it should be replaced soon. I woke up with back pain. The room also looks dated, and the hotel needs a major renovation. There’s little to do outside, apart from the exhibition hall next door.

The staff are very friendly, but the place feels much bigger and emptier than it needs to be. Being connected to a huge convention centre leaves it without much atmosphere, and it’s very isolated, with nothing nearby except the exhibition centre. The beach is hard to get to across the road and feels very industrial. The lounge food was stale and very average. Breakfast was fine, but nothing special.

The pools and natural spring were a great bonus, and the beach setting made this a good place to unwind. It’s a little far from the city center, but I’d happily make the trip again. My room had a roomy balcony, a thoughtful design, and comfortable beds and pillows. What really stood out was the service. Everyone, from the front desk to the restaurant and pool staff, greeted us and took care of requests quickly. Xiao Guo at the front desk and Jo Jo in the restaurant made my family feel especially welcome. Of all the Marriott hotels I’ve stayed at, Haikou Marriott is my favorite in Hainan, and the one I most want to return to.

The buffet was a bright spot, with plenty of tasty options. The building and grounds are beautiful, too. But the hotel feels dated and needs repairs and better maintenance. It also seemed short-staffed, especially when it came to experienced employees. There’s a lot that could be improved, though I can see how staffing and management issues might make that difficult. Even so, I found my stay satisfying.

The rooms have a nice tropical design, and the area feels safe for walks along the beach. The location is especially convenient if you’re going to the famous Fair.
