Grand Metropark Hotel Hangzhou

The rooms were clean, and the hotel staff were helpful. They called taxis for us and shared useful information. West Lake is within walking distance, with lots of shopping malls along the way.

I’d stay here again, though next time I might try somewhere else to compare. The location worked well, with shops along the way to West Lake, about a ten-minute walk away. The train station was around 20 minutes by taxi. The room size was fine, but I thought it was a little child. The thermostat seemed to be a dummy, since changing it didn’t affect the temperature. The bathroom was the awkward bit: it was small, with the door swinging in front of the shower door and the toilet right in the middle. It’s fine for one person, and the shower itself was big. The bedroom was a good size, though I’d have preferred a smaller bedroom and a larger bathroom. The hotel felt a little dated, but still modern enough. The gym wasn’t great, though you could get a bit of a workout on the cardio equipment. WiFi was average, with lots of dropouts. I didn’t try the restaurant. There’s a lobby coffee shop, but the coffee was lousy, which seems pretty standard for China. There was no doorman at the entrance, so sometimes you have to walk down to the road to get a taxi, which isn’t ideal with luggage.

There are eateries and malls nearby, and the hotel’s over 15 floors high, with wonderful views from up there. It’s beautiful and in a strategic location. The service really stands out, from room service to the complimentary breakfast and the warm welcome at reception. Very impressive.

The room view was ugly, and the lighting was insufficient. Rooms were somewhat dirty and not very large, with a desk, two chairs, and a minibar. There was space for just one suitcase, though the bed was quite spacious. The TV had almost only Chinese channels, as in most hotels in China. The hotel WiFi was nearly unusable without a VPN, also common across hotels in China. The bathroom had a bathtub, but was small and not very clean. Breakfast, both sweet and savory, was acceptable.
