The rooms are very small and lack basic facilities. I was refused drinking water in a rather insulting way, and the service was very poor. Staff don’t speak English at all. You also can’t connect to the Wi-Fi without a local Chinese mobile number.

I stayed in a single room at the Vienna Hotel on an Air China trip from Narita to Hangzhou, then Hangzhou to Chengdu. The airline provided it free as a transit hotel in Hangzhou. From Terminal 4 at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, I used Didi from the K2 taxi pickup point. The ride took about 10 minutes and cost about 32 RMB. After leaving the arrivals lobby, go right to reach K2, just before HYATT PLACE. I arrived late at night and was leaving around 1 AM, so I didn’t ask the hotel for a shuttle then. Taking a taxi wasn’t especially inconvenient. The hotel building can’t be seen from the road, so finding it at night may be tricky. From the Vienna Hotel Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport parking lot, go around the back. I was relieved to spot the neon “Lifeng Hotel” sign. In daylight, there’s a large arrow on the street-facing side of the Vienna Hotel pointing to the Lavande Hotel. Go through the Vienna Hotel and out the back, and the Lavande Hotel (LAVANDE HOTELS-HANGZHOU XIAOSHAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT) is right in front. Behind the Vienna Hotel there’s a basic, always-open self-service convenience shop with drinks, snacks, souvenirs, ice cream, cigarettes and other things. I was thirsty, so I paid 3 yuan with AliPay for a cold Sprite and drank it in one go (lol). Check-in was quick. I only needed my passport and boarding pass, and got my key right away. Even late at night, the woman at reception was prompt and booked the airport shuttle for the next morning. She clearly told me to meet in the lobby 10 minutes before departure. The room was simple and practical, and it was quiet, so I took a quick shower and slept well. My suitcase was being sent on to my final destination through baggage handling, and I’d thought I might need to ask reception for anything I needed, but it turned out fine. There were two free bottles of water, towel slippers, a toothbrush, comb, shower cap, single-use shower gel and shampoo. With a change of underwear in my carry-on, staying overnight was no trouble. The carpet pattern reminded me of the one at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Shuri, Okinawa, which gave me a little sense of luxury (lol). The hotel may be older, but it was clean and quiet, had all the amenities I needed and offered an airport shuttle. It was only a 10-minute drive away, and the room rate was reasonable. I thought it was a good option for personal use before or after a late-night or early-morning flight.

It’s a handy place to rest during a layover of more than six hours, and you can take a bus to the airport. The staff don’t speak English, but they’re happy to assist with a translation device.
