What makes China Resources stand out among state-owned hotel groups is its attention to design and quality. From early projects like Grand Hyatt Shenzhen and The Kapok Shenzhen Bay to The St. Regis Hong Kong, Park Hyatt Hangzhou, and Andaz Shenzhen Bay, its properties show careful thought about architecture and local culture. Its own Mumian brand has since partnered with Hyatt on design-led hospitality. The Mumian Hangzhou, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, which opened in 2023, is a mature example of that collaboration and one of China's most notable Mumian hotels. The hotel is part of the Ya'aocheng complex in Century City, a supporting development for the Asian Games. It's south of the Qiantang River, connected to the Hangzhou Ya'aocheng MixC commercial district, and directly accessible via Metro Line 6. The neighborhood is new and orderly, though the surrounding development is still in progress and feels somewhat open. BAR Studio, an Australian firm whose design lineage is shared with Tony Chi and whose work includes Rosewood Beijing and Rosewood Phnom Penh, designed the interiors. Its idea of a "vertical community" brings together Hangzhou's heritage, Jiangnan elegance, and imagery from West Lake. The public spaces feel connected and tell a story. The lobby flows into the lounge as one open social area. Nearby, the library and book lounge feature a large mural called "Journey Through Lakes and Mountains." Its layered scenery and warm colors draw on Jiangnan culture, and the same visual thread carries into the rooms and other spaces. The property is in its first phase, with 186 rooms and suites. Standard rooms start at 35 square meters. I stayed in the Mumian River View Suite, which measures 60 to 66 square meters. It has a clear layout and BAR Studio's retro artistic style, with details such as brass trim and decorative frames. The bedroom has 270-degree views of the river and skyline, the "Xiao Mian" smart system, and comfortable bedding. The bathroom is a standout, with a soaking tub by the window, a Dyson hair dryer, and Atelier Cologne toiletries. In recently opened Mumian hotels, bathtubs are available only in suites. The facilities are above the brand's usual level. On the sixth floor there's a spacious gym, a dedicated yoga studio, and a heated indoor pool. That combination is currently available only here and at The Mumian Chengdu Dong'an Lake. Beside the pool, a scenic hot spring pool looks out over the river. The outdoor terrace, "The Pavilion," is also on this floor and can host meetings and events in a calm, ceremonial setting. Dining is limited to the Xiao Nanyang all-day restaurant. Its buffet breakfast has both Eastern and Western options, though the overall flavor could be better. China Resources has stuck with distinctive design instead of cookie-cutter projects, working with designers such as Tony Chi and André Fu before its current partnership with BAR Studio on narrative-driven spaces. The group focuses on substance over hype, giving its hotels a clear identity and cultural depth. The Mumian Hangzhou carries that approach through sincerely.

It's quiet and pleasant, with friendly, attentive staff and good food. I'd recommend it and would like to come back.
