Xizi Lakeview Hotel

The setting is wonderfully peaceful and romantic, a great choice for anyone wanting some quiet in the area. I was there for work, though, and wished my wife could have joined me. The hotel complex is beautiful, with fantastic rooms in charming buildings. Breakfast was superb, the service excellent, and the staff everywhere were friendly. I’d happily come back. It’s easy to see why the G20 met here.

I was in town for business, and West Lake was right out front. The night market was close, with department stores, outlets, and shopping centers also within reach. The hotel is old, but the rooms were clean, the lobby looked stylish, and the hairdryer was excellent. My room was in good condition, breakfast had lots of choices, the restaurant was spacious and excellent, and the staff were friendly. The air conditioner made a little noise when it was switched on. I also noticed what seemed to be a massage function on the bed. Scanning its QR code sent me to WeChat Pay, so I figured it was a paid feature. I wanted to give it a try, but the instructions were in Chinese and English, and I gave up. Papago didn’t translate very well either. There’s a shop in the hotel that sells Maotai liquor. The prices were high, but Maotai is expensive anyway, and they gave us complimentary glasses and peanuts. I also bought a teapot and teacups at a pottery shop for a discounted price. I arrived by taxi and had trouble because Alipay wasn’t working well. A staff member paid for me, which I really appreciated. The one downside was that they don’t exchange Korean won, so my travel companion went to a bank to get money changed and gave it to me.

The welcome was exceptionally courteous, and the beds were comfortable. Our room was reasonably priced, though it was at the back and the view wasn't much to look at. The hotel itself was fine, with a huge choice of hot and cold breakfast items. It's right by the lake: cross the road and walk about 50 meters, and you're among the many Chinese visitors. From there it's a matter of strolling along or adjusting to the crowds.
