The biggest letdown was the gym, pool, and spa. They’re in an aging recreational club in another building, and getting there means an unpleasantly long walk. The hotel also hasn’t redone its second floor to match the rest, despite a recent upgrade that improved its overall quality. It’s at the back of the famous Xi Hu scenic precinct, about a 20-minute stroll over the hill, with subway and buses right outside. In the room, the AC made a loud dripping noise that disturbed sleep, the shower drain didn’t work properly and water spilled out, the wardrobe doors wouldn’t operate, and the Wi-Fi was hard to connect to and seemed to block Google and some overseas sites. With a more thorough renovation, this could have been a great hotel.

The buffet breakfast was great, though the Japanese restaurant was a bit expensive. Staff speak a little English, and the Dutch hotel manager could help in several ways. The hotel has a gym, sauna, and swimming pool, but you need a swimming cap to use the pool. You can buy one there, or you can’t swim. It’s near the stadium, bus terminal, and Walmart, and also close to West Lake, which I didn’t get to visit this time. This was my first stay in Hangzhou, and my colleague had said it was one of the better hotels they’d stayed at. I’ve visited bigger cities than Hangzhou, and there’s still a lot of development to come. Some areas have new buildings, but most buildings are still very old.

The hotel feels like five-star quality, though only a few staff members speak English. There’s rooftop seating on the 17th floor, three restaurants, a Starbucks, a gym, spa, sauna, and men-only jacuzzis.

The hotel is generally clean and good, and the staff are polite, but people were smoking on the non-smoking room floor. The hotel should enforce a complete ban on smoking.
