The Modern Hotel has a lovely old-world feel, with luxurious amenities and excellent service. Its Baroque and Art Nouveau details have been carefully kept, both on the ornate interior and the elegant exterior. It sits in central Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, and its history goes back to 1906, when Russian investors built it as the “Madieer Hotel.” Harbin’s elite and international travelers used to gather there. Restored to its former glory and recognized as a heritage hotel, it remains a charming place to experience the city’s history and culture.

I loved the coffee flavor. Ma Di Er (Modern) Ice Cream costs 5 yuan a piece, under 1 USD, and comes in coffee or milk. At -15 degrees, you can take all the time you want to eat it without worrying about it melting.

The dining room was packed in tight, and the entertainment was awful. Service was slow and chaotic, and the soup tasted worse than Campbell’s. It was the worst restaurant experience I’ve had in years. If they were aiming for a Soviet-style experience, they pulled it off.

The location is the one good thing. There’s no luggage rack, and they don’t seem to know what one is, so we had to put our bags on the coffee table. The Wi-Fi reception and breakfast were poor too.

Whenever I’m back in Harbin, I get the Ma Di Er ice cream outside. It’s a local favorite, and although you can find it elsewhere, this is the authentic, real deal.
