On December 13, I had dinner at the yum cha buffet at Shang Palace with my guests, and it was the worst we've had. The food looked like the photos, but tasted like leftovers from the night before. Most menu items had already sold out by 6:30pm, even though the restaurant stays open until 8:30pm. Four of the ten dishes we ordered never arrived. We ordered one portion each of bbq pork, chicken, and roast duck. Though that should have been three orders, it came as one order with four pieces of each, as shown in the first photos. The dumplings seemed like they'd just come from the freezer and been warmed in a microwave. The red bean soup dessert was worse. We ordered three hot portions, but only one arrived after 30 minutes. We rejected it because it was cold and tasted bad. Fifteen minutes later, they told us they were out. Service was poor throughout. It felt like they had nothing to serve and just wanted us to leave. 😢

For a business hotel, having the gym open only at 7am is ridiculous. Business travelers dealing with jet lag count on 24-hour gym access. I was too tired to ask anyone to fix the air conditioning, which wasn't working. The room was the oldest I've experienced at any Shangri la. Also, for an international brand, I expected the front desk and breakfast staff to speak English, but they couldn't.

The Horizon Business Lounge has a great view, and the breakfast buffet has enough variety for even picky eaters. The rooms are comfortable, and the Shangri-La name sets it apart. Given the premium price, you're almost guaranteed a good time. The hotel's biggest selling point is its location, location, location. My one wish is for a better-equipped gym, with an Olympic lifting platform or lifting cage like the Shangri-La in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia. Otherwise, I had a nice stay at Shangri-La Huhhot and a pleasant trip.

The restaurant had a good range of food, and I had a good stay for my two nights. The hotel feels luxurious, though it's quite old and has a traditional design.

This is the best hotel I've stayed at in China. Miss Anna Yin, the PR manager, was professional and kind, and made me feel right at home. I'd never been to this city before, but it doesn't feel new to me anymore. Thank you, Anna, and thank you, Shangri-la Hohhot.
