The main drawback is how crowded it gets during the day, especially around the main lakes. I found that getting up near sunrise is a good way to enjoy the quiet and take photos before the tour groups arrive. Hongcun is a beautiful ancient village, with remarkably well-preserved white walls, black tiles, narrow stone lanes, and old wooden houses that feel untouched by time. Its two small lakes add a lot of charm. Reflections of the buildings and surrounding hills on the water are stunning, especially early in the morning or near sunset, and nearly every corner makes a good photo.

This gorgeous old village still has its charm despite the heavy commercialization. I went for the evening and felt its character was at its most exuberant around sunset and dusk.

The strange, almost surreal scenery is worth taking in, whether you visit by day or after dark. I could easily spend 3-4 hours wandering around, shopping, and taking photos.

A lovely old town, and a great place to take photos.

The water reflections are pretty, though they look better in photos than they do in person. Still, I found the place overrated. It’s small enough to see in about an hour to an hour and a half, and much of the food feels aimed at tourists. What was once an ancient village now seems packed with visitors. For some reason, foreign passport holders get 50 percent off admission. I can’t believe this is rated a 5A tourist destination. It didn’t feel like a top-tier attraction to me.
