I’m not sure why this is listed as a hotel recommendation, since Dongzha Wuzhen is a scenic area, not a hotel. Wuzhen has two parts, Dong Zha and Xi Zha. Dong Zha is more of a cultural and historical walk, and I was told the people living there are the only original residents. The area is clean and well organized. Some museums require an extra ticket, and the textile place seemed mostly set up for photos. It’s a pleasant walk, about 2.5-3 km from entrance to exit. I joined a tour, which was nice because without the guide’s explanations, you’d just walk the streets without learning much.
Bring your passport. The WuZhen East area gets five stars from me, and having a guide explain the details would make the visit better.
A lovely place to spend the night, with hotels and guesthouses along the canal. There’s plenty to do, along with food to try, shopping, and scenic spots for photos. The water town is beautiful, clean, and well managed. I was very impressed and highly recommend it.
Still feels like a hidden gem, peaceful and not overly commercialized. One of China’s most authentic ancient towns.
Getting there can be a bit of a hurdle, but it’s a must-see. The historical buildings have kept their original style, and there are some really good places to eat. Give yourself enough time to sit by the creeks in the evening. There are also plenty of hotels.
