The weak Wi-Fi and very mediocre breakfast were the downsides. Some dishes that should have been hot were cold. The hotel is made up of several sections around a temple, with rooms arranged around classic patios that give the place a lot of character. The rooms are atmospheric and stylish, and you sleep on a traditional kang, a large raised stone platform that was once heated from below in winter. A golf cart takes about 10 minutes to reach the complex inside the walls of charming Pingyao.

We stayed for two nights in this beautiful hotel in the heart of the old town. It's stunning inside and out, though you do pay for the setting. Our room rate included breakfast: sweet toast, fried eggs, chicken nuggets, fries, butter, jam, tea, coffee, and orange juice. Staff speak only Chinese, but they have a small translator, so getting by and chatting was easy. Drinks outside breakfast hours can cost up to €5 for a cup of tea or coffee, which is steep. There are plenty of little restaurants nearby, though.
