Staying inside Kashgar Ancient City is highly recommended. Food, local goods, and souvenirs are easy to find everywhere. Some parts are very touristy, but walking there still feels like being in an old town, and the side lanes are fun to explore away from the crowds. At the North Gate, a major performance takes place every morning at 10:30 and draws a crowd, so arrive early if you want a good spot for photos or video. Turn right at the gate and walk uphill to find a 50 m stretch of places to eat and drink at night. That area is well worth experiencing.

There are some lovely little streets, but I wish there were more kinds of restaurants. The shops don’t offer much variety, and there isn’t really a spot to sit and have coffee. In the evening, you can hang out by the wall and have a beer.

An impressive historic site with amazing old buildings. Inside, there are souvenir sellers, food stalls, and restaurants all over the place.

Walking around Kashgar old city early in the morning was a great experience. The buildings have a lot of cultural character.

The atmosphere really comes alive around sunset, when the golden light falls on the earthen buildings. Try the freshly baked naan and have a look at the local handicrafts. It’s a dream for photographers, and the cultural experience stays with you after you leave. A guided tour is well worth considering to understand the place’s history and significance. If you’re in Xinjiang, I’d highly recommend a visit. The traditional Uyghur architecture is breathtaking, and the ancient streets and busy bazaars make Kashgar Old City feel like a living museum. Wandering through its winding alleys, you’ll come across artisan workshops, lively street food vendors, and welcoming locals who are happy to share their culture.
