Back in 1991, the reception staff were fantastic and made the place great for foreigners. I’m sure that’s still the case. The building used to be the Russian Embassy during the Great Game era.

The little restaurant out back sells burgers and sandwiches, serves a Western breakfast, and organizes tours. The hotel itself is odd but fun, like staying inside a sparkly pastel gingerbread house. It’s aimed at backpackers, or maybe a notch above that.

It’s right in the center, so the main sights and markets are easy to reach. The place is very good and reasonably priced, with hot water available all the time and Wi-Fi.

This is a distinctive hotel with a hundred-year history, and I’d say it’s a must-stay in Kashgar. There are lots of restaurants nearby. Ms. Rayhan at reception was very welcoming and speaks English very well. She can arrange what you need in Kashgar, including a private car to Karakul Lake for 1000 Yuan per car per day.
