Hillwood House Hotel

The staff were friendly and helpful, and they let us store our luggage for free. The room itself was a letdown. It was very small, with no chair or table, dim lighting, and a hard, uncomfortable bed. It felt pricey for what we got. The soundproofing is terrible. There's a club nearby, and we could hear people partying from our room. It wasn't very clean either: there was dust and stains on the toilet floor. Scanning the QR code to use the lift and enter the room was difficult.

The room was very small, so check other reviews before booking. A large building in front blocks the view, so don't be fooled by the pictures. The soundproofing is poor too: I woke up to the next room's phone alarm, heard people talking, and the door closing was loud. There was also a wide gap between the shower doors. When I showered, water leaked out and ran toward the toilet. Not very good, not four stars, not even one.

The location is perfect, but that's where the good parts end. I booked because of the location, price, and the incredible-looking room photos. The rooms do look somewhat like the online pictures, but there just isn't enough space. We had an executive room and asked right away for extra pillows and a doona or blanket. There were only two flimsy pillows and a sheet, and they could give us just one more pillow, no blanket. The bed was hard as concrete. If that's what you like, fine, but during our five-night stay I kept thinking about booking another hotel because I couldn't sleep at all. I've never had a less comfortable mattress, and it ruined our stay. The TV only had local channels, with no streaming. Are we not in 2025? We had some beers on the patio, but the outdoor furniture had gaping holes and belonged in a dumpster. They didn't have lounge cushions when we asked, either. The whole outdoor area needs a major revamp; it's decrepit and uninviting. The QR code for the lifts and room doors was infuriating to use, with the scanner set low in an awkward position. They could do so many things to improve this place. Next time I've learned to stick with hotels that have proper amenities and a pool.

I never got to stay at this hotel. I booked a couple of nights for around 4600HK$, then a regional conflict broke out in my country. With the bombing, I couldn't leave, and the flight operator canceled the route from our airport. They gave me an official letter confirming the cancellation. I explained everything to the hotel, but they refused a refund, even saying they wouldn't refund even if there were a typhoon. I know the booking was non-refundable, but I hoped they'd show some understanding when traveling was outside my control. I've lost a lot of money for nothing, and I hope others see how they do business.
