Ah Shan Hostel is really about location and keeping costs down. It's in the middle of Mong Kok, a minute or two from the MTR and major bus routes, with Ladies' Market and big shopping centers just nearby. There are plenty of local and international places to eat on the surrounding streets. The building is a busy, densely populated residential one. At peak times the elevator can mean a five to ten-minute wait, and you get a very direct feel for how local residents live. It's lively and quite raw, a long way from the polished atmosphere of a luxury hotel. The rooms are basic, with working air conditioning and bathroom facilities, though both show the age of the building. This is a budget place for travelers who mainly need somewhere to sleep after exploring. It has a backpacker feel and puts affordability and access to the city's attractions first.

The owner was welcoming, and the price felt very affordable for what you get. The rooms were clean and had en-suite bathrooms with shampoo and soap. They also provide adapters and power strips, plus a water dispenser, coffee, and a hairdryer. It's close to Mongkok MTR station, and you can take the A21 bus straight from the airport. The area doesn't feel isolated, and I think it's safe for solo female travelers. There are two restaurants nearby that stay open 24 hours.

The service was the worst part of my stay at Ah Shan Hostel. I came back to collect my luggage, which had been left unsecured in the hallway without tags, and the owner, an older woman, started yelling because I was putting some things I'd just bought into my suitcase. She acted as if I might be stealing from other people. I calmly asked her not to shout and offered to show the receipt, but she stayed hostile. After I complained, she also started screaming at the lady who had received me. I paid €86 for one night in a tiny private room after spending a week in a hotel, hoping to experience the local vibe and meet people. It was a huge mistake for that price. The shower had no separation, so using it soaked the whole toilet area. I also had just 3% battery and needed to get to the airport, but she wouldn't let me charge my phone for a few minutes unless I paid an extra rental fee. When I raised the issues, she told me, "Go to a hotel next time." The hostel is "famous" for its resident cat, used as their WhatsApp profile picture. When I asked to see him, the owner said he was sick and she wouldn't take him to the vet because it was "too expensive." It was heartbreaking to see a pet used for marketing while its health was neglected.

Had a great stay, and the location is excellent. The building has lots of elevators from the Main Street, with reception on the 14th floor and my room on the 15th. The beds were clean, the mattress decent, no funky smells, and I slept well enough for the price. My room for two nights was clean, and it had its own toilet. No Jed bugs. Don't expect ritz Carlton, but she takes care of the rooms. The owner was super sweet, spoke good English, and the staff were friendly. The BOSS the cat is super friendly too, and he's usually at reception. I'm a sucker for cats, so that was a plus.

The room was maintained well, though it was a bit small and the beds had no curtains. For the price in Hong Kong, I thought it was very good. You're right above Mong Kok MTR, which makes getting around and finding food easy. The owner was really nice, and the cat was very fluffy.
