The only good things I saw were the lizards in the corridor eating cockroaches and the convenient subway connection. The rooms were tiny, dirty, and smelled like a latrine, and at 9.30 a hammering noise woke me up as if it were coming from the next room. There were lots of sex workers offering sex, and I felt unsafe as a woman. My girlfriend and I felt trapped, and I saw fear in the eyes of other foreigners too. People there were trying to impose rules on everyone. The place made me think of slums in Pakistan, India, or Africa. I should add that Jackie, the Hindu landlord, was very nice and didn’t seem to fit the place. He gave me the impression he was a good guy.
