E Mei Shan Century Sunshine Shangsai Hotel

The lobby and breakfast restaurant had real 5star hotel vibes. Our room was an upgraded suite, with older furniture that was still well maintained and all the amenities inside. It's on the main street, with McDonald across from the hotel.

We were bracing ourselves after reading earlier reviews, but check-in brought a pleasant surprise: a spacious Triple room on the 20th floor that looked newly renovated. The furnishings were in good shape, the bathroom was roomy and clean, and the beds were comfortable. We also had a gorgeous sunrise view. Breakfast, though, was basic and very crowded.

It's an older hotel, and the room we had was very large, with a comfortable bed, decent cleanliness, and good AC. We stayed two nights while visiting Emeishan and Chengdu China. Breakfast came with our package and was a very local Chinese-style spread. Communication was a bit hard since not many staff speak English. It seemed like guests were allowed to smoke inside, as locals appeared to do so.

The room is quite large and looks nice at first, but it feels dirty once you look more closely. Some of the carpet looks extremely unclean, and there's a faint musty smell in the bedroom and a very strong one in the bathroom. I'm glad we're only here for one night. It was 28° Celsius when we arrived. I set the AC to high, but after 30 minutes the room was still at 27°. Hopefully it keeps cooling down. This doesn't feel like what I'd expect from a 4 star hotel. It seems like it may have been one 5-10 years ago, but hasn't been kept up. From this room, even 3 stars feels too generous.
