D7, April 24: Jokhang Temple stands in Barkhor Square and includes a Tibetan Buddhist temple complex and a Gelug school monastery. King Songsten Gampo built it around 640 to house a statue of Akshobhya Buddha, brought to Tibet by his Nepalese queen, Bhrikuti. It is one of Tibet's most important religious sites, holding a statue said to be 2,500 years old, from the time of Shakyamuni Buddha. The main temple building has four floors. Buildings in central Lhasa are limited to four floors in height.
Jokhang Temple is another well-known temple to visit. Many people were there praying, which was moving to see. Outside, there's a busy shopping area where you can browse for a bit.
Jokhang Temple and Bakhor Street are beautiful both by day and at night. During the day, pilgrims and curious visitors fill the area; after dark, the street is just as breathtaking. I visited twice, once in daylight and once at night, and found the place full of wonder and cultural charm. It's a must-see in Lhasa, with so much to explore. Please be mindful of the pilgrims as they pray. Give them plenty of room and avoid photographing them.
The monks' practices and the spiritual atmosphere made this visit stand out for me, even though the compact center can feel a little oppressive. This is a monastery and the most sacred Tibetan Buddhist temple in Lhassa and China for Buddhist practitioners. Built in 640 BC, it holds a statue of the living Buddha at age 12, brought from India by Queen Wenchen. There are many chapels and statues, including some very old ones. Based on my experience, this is the temple to visit in Lhassa. No photos are allowed in the central part.
There were plenty of pilgrims worshipping alongside tourists like me, so it was a busy place. I found it inspiring and enjoyable, and the local people were very friendly. The setting is stunning, with mountains in the background and beautiful indoor areas, where photography isn't allowed. I also learned a lot about Buddhist religion and history.
