Novotel Nanjing East Suning

I can’t believe this is a Novotel. It was very expensive, yet a terrible place, with no shops or restaurants anywhere nearby and seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The staff couldn’t speak any English. I’d like my money back.

The location is central, with plenty around, and we enjoyed the local breakfast spread with some international options. We were in too much of a rush to eat, but you can ask for a takeout container. For travel during peak hours, it’s best to arrange a ride with the concierge ahead of time. Getting a cab, even from the hotel lobby, is difficult, so the train is a good alternative. Staff were often very helpful and sincere. At checkout, our luggage went missing, but it was recovered quickly. Thank you, Ms Lee, for patiently reassuring me while the team went to retrieve it. The reception area is small but welcoming, and check-in was quick. When I realized my room faced the passageway, I asked to change rooms and they did so without any questions.

The room on the 4th floor was spacious, with a balcony and excellent bathroom facilities. The area was quiet, without traffic noise, with a metro station 100 metres away and a supermarket two minutes from the hotel. Breakfast was a very good buffet, and the cleaning lady was always cheerful and obliging. She did a superb job, as cleaning staff often do without recognition. Reception and dining staff had trouble smiling, unlike her. You also couldn’t sit in the lounge area near the bar without ordering a drink, even though it was never crowded. The dining area coffee machine only made lukewarm coffee. Nearby restaurants were at least 1 km away, though the supermarket had a sort of food hall. I’d certainly stay again.

For the money, this is easily the best deal in Nanjing. The rooms are spacious and very well designed. I enjoyed my one-night stay here.
