Kaiyue Hostel

The location made it easy to explore on foot: St Michael's Cathedral, Zhanqiao Pier, University Street and other attractions are walkable, and the nearest subway station is about five minutes away. The hostel sits on a hill, but it's not too steep to manage with luggage. Breakfast at the L1 cafe was a highlight. We tried a different one of the 6-8 Western-style sets each morning, all served with salad and orange juice, and never got tired of them. The egg's benedict was especially good. There are useful spaces here too, including a laundry room, meeting room, and an air conditioned lounge with books and games. It has a balcony overlooking the city and cathedral, which would be a nice spot for a beer in the evening. We had a comfortable five-night stay in a double bed guest room. It was very clean and well maintained, though the toilet was a bit small. One light didn't work on our first day, leaving the room dim, but staff fixed it the next day. The service was excellent. Staff were warm and explained the attractions and how to walk to them. I rarely give five stars, but this hostel earned them. It's in a renovated historic building, so there are no lifts. Our room was on the top, third floor, and bags may need to be carried up, although staff kindly offered to take ours on the first day. It may not suit wheelchair users or people with limited mobility.
