People often come here from Hong Kong, Macau and overseas, including for family visits or because they live there long term. The restaurant has a grand, comfortable feel and serves traditional local dishes at reasonable prices, so locals like it too. There’s plenty to talk about in this fourth-tier city, especially the changes people have seen as many relatives and friends moved abroad or to Hong Kong and Macau. It brings to mind the old “Huashan Sword Debate,” only now it’s the “Fengcheng Changes Discussion.” People compare everyday costs: vegetables in Fengcheng are 3-5 yuan per pound, while in Hong Kong they can cost over 10-20 yuan, about five times as much. Other basics are pricey too. By that comparison, a family earning 5,000 yuan in Fengcheng would need 25,000 yuan to keep up a basic standard of living in Hong Kong. Homes are another big difference: a 40-square-meter flat in Hong Kong, or 400 square feet, costs 6.7 million yuan. For a third of that, you could get a lovely 200-square-meter luxury apartment in Fengcheng.
