I haven’t had a regular room like this at hotels I’ve stayed in China or elsewhere. It’s modern and so pretty, honestly more than five stars. In the restaurant, staff carry your plates if you’ve got too many on the way to the table, and they offer free laundry and drying. My one wish is that the rooms were more consistent. My friend paid the same price for a room twice the size of mine.

The rooms are spacious, clean, and high-tech, with electric curtains in every room. The hotel has been renovated, and it even uses a robot to bring food deliveries to your room, something common in China. It’s been operating in Qionghai for decades and is one of the town’s best-known luxury hotels. By European standards it might be a low four-star place, but it used to be a real source of pride for locals.
