Park Hyatt Sanya Sunny Bay Resort

We spent two nights at this resort in March 2023 and would happily return. As a foreigner who doesn’t speak Chinese, traveling on the mainland can sometimes be difficult, but the staff here made a real effort to welcome us every time we interacted with them. The resort is stylish and chic, and very well maintained. We ate at most of the restaurants and bars, and everything was first rate. The pool was fantastic, and the beachfront had a great swimming area that felt safe, which isn’t always a given in Hainan. I’d definitely recommend a visit.

The pool was great, and the beach was excellent. The hotel was clean and spacious, well maintained, quiet, classy, and relaxing. The free breakfast was nice and served until 11, and they provided as much complimentary bottled water as I needed. I was much happier here than at another branded hotel in Hawaii. Sunny Bay is beside the hotel, but you have to drive there. It’s very private, though quite far from other restaurants. The food at the hotel restaurants was just so-so and didn’t feel worth the price. It’s hard to believe the hot pot restaurant is in a top luxury hotel. The mocktails and snacks were fine, but not as good as what you’d get at a small tea shop in the city.

The staff were exceptional, including Edwin and Caroline, but the resort itself felt underwhelming. The design and architecture are the main drawback for me. It’s much larger than it needs to be, with space that doesn’t seem well used, leaving the hotel feeling empty and without much soul or atmosphere. There weren’t many inviting places to sit and relax, like cozy cabanas or seating areas where couples or families might spend time, so we often just went back to the room. The long, oversized hallways had little to see along the way. More shops, another restaurant for variety, and activities or events for guests could help fill the space and make the resort more enjoyable. The offering and design seem a bit outdated, and may struggle to compete with newer developments on the island.
