Alila Shanghai

The architecture and carefully considered spaces at Alila Shanghai made a real impression on me, as did the restaurants and the overall setting. It’s one of the best hotels I’ve stayed at in the city, and honestly makes me want to move to Shanghai. I’m already thinking about coming back and even considering a longer stay in one of the rooms. That’s how much I liked it. Five stars, and I’ll be back for sure.

The interior design and relaxing feel make this the best hotel I’ve stayed at in Shanghai so far. It’s in a superb spot, with plenty of good restaurants, cafes, and shops within walking distance. I’ll book it again on my next trip.

The hotel has a dark, moody look that I liked, though it divided our group. There were lots of influencers(?) taking Instagram photos in the lobby. Outside, construction on a new high-rise next door was very loud all day. We stayed in the room for a day, so it was unfortunate to have to listen to it. I stayed in a residence suite on the top floor. The room had great style, nice furniture, a great bed, and a very nice double-height ceiling. The automatic curtains and lights worked well, though the thermostat didn't seem to do much for heat and the room temperature fluctuated a lot. It was strange that switching off the bedroom lights also seemed to turn off the bathroom lights. The staff are all young and trying, but their English is hit or miss, from good to none. Staff were usually stationed by the elevators and at hallway choke points. WeChat made it easy to ask them questions. Deliveries went to an electronic locker when the courier supported it; otherwise, they were left at the ground-floor valet desk. Breakfast was okay, but the selection was weaker than at other Asian hotels I've stayed in. The Western food, like eggs, wasn't great, so stick to Chinese.

The hotel is very good apart from one issue I can't accept: all the emergency exits on the guest floors were locked. I was told they're automatic and would open if there's a fire, and that staff would help. They also put that explanation in writing to me. I find this unacceptable and won't stay here again.
