The room was quite spacious, with a proper desk area, kettle, and tea and coffee sets. The wardrobe had a decent hair dryer and disposable slippers. But at reception, not everyone spoke English, and staff let people cut in and barge ahead, so I was left waiting. Room 719 smelled horribly of drains, so I asked to move. The receptionist said I could change rooms, just not then. I asked if it could be handled while I was out at work and left my suitcase at reception. When I got back, nothing had been done. They said they'd called me in my room during the day. I pointed out that leaving my suitcase there meant I was obviously away. They just said, "Sorry. We cannot do anything." I had to spend another night with the smell. The overpowering old-urine odor comes from the air conditioning, though it isn't in every room. Breakfast vouchers are for the restaurant next door, where there's no coffee, tea, or juice. I had soup instead.

The subway station is right next to the hotel, which made the location fantastic. Check-in was convenient and hassle-free.

Breakfast is served at the local Chinese restaurant next door, with dumplings and steamed buns rather than things like sausage or ham. The food is country-style, with garlicky, strong flavors that aren't tailored to Japanese tastes, so don't expect a typical hotel breakfast. I paid 8000 yen for a double bed, a superior alarm clock, and breakfast. It was before National Day, but the price increase wasn't as steep as at other hotels, which is why I stayed. The place started out as a love hotel in Singapore and is still what people call a "love hotel." It has been renovated in recent years and is a little nicer now, though it still feels mid-range at best.

Everything I needed was in the room: two single beds, a basic desk and chair, a little single sofa, a shower, and an LCD TV. It wasn't especially spacious. The area is lively, with malls, restaurants, and convenience stores nearby. Since I get around Shanghai only by subway and taxi, it helped that Fu Yi Fashion Hotel is so close to a subway station.
