Fairy House

Getting here by car could be tricky because the hotel sits in a small alley opposite a department store, so it's easy to miss. It's quiet despite all the activity around, with Huamao Hotel right next door and the subway close by. The building seems to be an old villa, perhaps once home to a wealthy family, and it's been very well maintained. I stayed three nights in an executive room with a big living room and bedroom. I liked the vintage East-West mix in the decor, and spent plenty of time lying on the large bed, watching TV and dozing. The drawbacks were weak shower pressure, somewhat worn rooms, and no elevator. Carrying luggage and checking in or out on the second floor was a hassle. Breakfast is served in another building, and each night I had to order the next day's meal in advance, for example wontons. The front desk staff were friendly. The atmosphere around the hotel felt like stepping back into early 19th-century Shanghai.

Breakfast is served in a little building next door, and our room was surprisingly spacious. The hotel itself is small, with a pleasant, distinctive feel, and it’s close to the subway. We found it really convenient for sightseeing. Very good.
