We stayed three nights, and getting the room noise dealt with took until the final night. The air duct was making noise, but reception first handed us earplugs and said they'd check the next day, which they didn't. I complained again the second night. A technician then said the noise came from the duct and could only be stopped by turning off the air conditioning or heating. We asked to move rooms and got a lot of excuses before finally changing rooms on night three. The hotel is busy, and we had to queue for breakfast every morning. It's packed with local guests. Don't be misled by the European sounding name: most of the group's hotels are in China, and this is basically a Chinese hotel serving locals. The facilities are old and poorly maintained, which may explain the room noise. Staff weren't helpful and seemed busy attending to local guests. With 98% of guests being local, it felt like foreigners weren't a priority.

Expect a wait at check-in: each group of guests takes about 15-20 minutes. I've never seen a hotel make so little effort to speed up the process. There also wasn't any mobile staff in the lobby to help guests who might need assistance.

IMHO, Shanghai's best location. It's close to the main sights but away from the crowds, and great for a morning or evening walk or run. It's also easy to get anywhere by train or didi.
